Registering an Outlet

Unless you are using Wireless or a DSL option to connect to the network, your machine must be connected to a registered outlet to gain access to the network.

The outlet does not necessarily need to be registered by you. If the outlet is already registered by someone else and you will be using a hub to connect your machine to it, or if someone else in your department has already registered the outlet, you should be able to connect your machine as long as the machine is properly registered.

However, if the outlet is not registered, click on [Register New Outlet] on the Main page of the Network Registration System to register it.

Step 1. Selecting the Location

The first page displayed when registering an outlet asks you to either identify the building in which the outlet is located, or to identify the outlet specifically.

By Building
Generally, it is best to identify the outlet specifically, if you can, but you can identify the outlet by building and room number if there is a problem reading the From: and To: values on the outlet itself.

To identify an outlet by building, select your building from the Building drop-down menu, then click on the Continue button to the right of it.

A list of outlets within that room will be displayed by room number.

By Outlet
If you have access to the outlet that you are registering and you can read the From: and To: numbers on the wallplate, it is best to simply enter them on this page.

Look on the wallplate for the outlet you want to use for two numbers that look like this:

     13@01-342-C4
     13@01-@F055

Enter the top number in the "From:" field and the bottom number in the "To:" field, then click on the Continue button to the right of the fields.

NOTE: If you can make out only one of the numbers, enter it in the appropriate field then click on the Continue button. If you can make out only the first part (before the dash) of one of the numbers, enter that and a list of outlets beginning with that number will be displayed.

If the outlet numbers you entered were valid, the Select and Outlet page will be displayed listing the outlet and its current status. If their are no outlets listed, use the Back button in your browser to go back to the page to select a building or outlet number.

Step 2: Selecting an Outlet by Room

When you select a building or enter a valid outlet number, the outlets for that building (or a single outlet if you entered a complete, valid outlet number) will be displayed.

  1. Page through the list, if necessary, to find your room number. If only one outlet is listed, verify that the room number is correct.

  2. If the value in the Activate column for an outlet is "Already Activated" you should be able to connect your machine to the outlet and use it. If the value is an "Activate" hyperlink, click on "Activate" to select that outlet and continue with the registration.

If there is more than one outlet for your room number, verify which outlet to use by checking the From: and To: values on the wallplate. If, for whatever reason, you cannot see the numbers on the wallplate, contact the Computing Services Help Center at CMU-HELP (268-4357) for assistance.

Step 3: Entering Outlet Information

Once you have identified the outlet you want to register, the outlet information page is displayed. You need to enter the information on this page so that the outlet can be activated properly.

Complete the following fields on this page (click on a field name for a description):

Step 4: Setting Protections

If you maintain outlet registrations for other users, a Protections section will be displayed on the Outlet Information page. Your user ID will be listed with Read and Write access checked by default. Any groups of which you are a member will also be listed with no access rights checked by default.

If you are registering this outlet for another user, you might want to uncheck the Read and Write rights for yourself and, instead, give Read and Write access to the group of which you are a member. That way, your User ID will not be associated directly with the outlet.

If you are registering the outlet for another user, you might also want to edit the outlet after you've registered it and add the user who will be using the outlet to the protections list. See Setting Protections for more information.

Step 5: Submit the Registration

When you have completed all fields on the Machine Information page, click on the Continue button to submit the registration request. If there are no problems with the values you entered, your registration request will be submitted and you should be able to access the network with the registered machine within two hours.
